Puerto Vallarta has plenty of live music.
What we do not have is an unlimited supply of performers who can walk into a room with a guitar, open their mouth, and make everybody stop what they are doing long enough to actually listen.
Kim Archer is one of those performers.
On Tuesday, September 22, Kim brings that voice, that guitar, and all that soul to Opal Bar PV for her debut performance at the Zona Romántica cocktail lounge.
Doors open at 6 PM.
Showtime is 7 PM.
Tickets are 300 pesos.
And seating is limited.
Translation: this may not be the night to casually stroll in at 7:18, look around confused, and ask somebody where your table is. 😂
THIS IS KIM ARCHER. NOT BACKGROUND MUSIC.
There are performers you listen to while you are having a cocktail.
Then there are performers who make you forget about the cocktail.
Kim belongs in that second group.
Her sound moves comfortably through soul, blues, R&B, funk, rock, and singer-songwriter territory, but trying to squeeze what she does into one neat little box misses the point.
Kim performs with personality.
There is grit in it.
There is humor in it.
There is experience in it.
And there is that thing I appreciate most in a live performer: she does not look like she is standing onstage waiting for permission to entertain you.
She owns the room.
Puerto Vallarta audiences have already had opportunities to catch Kim performing around town, but this show introduces her to a different room and a different atmosphere.
This is her Opal Bar PV debut.
And I think the pairing makes sense.
OPAL IS NOT TRYING TO BE EVERY OTHER BAR IN ZONA ROMÁNTICA
Zona Romántica does not exactly suffer from a shortage of nightlife.
We have dance floors.
We have drag.
We have tequila.
We have music.
We have shirtless men.
We have extremely optimistic decisions made after midnight.
God bless all of it.
But there is also an audience in Puerto Vallarta that occasionally wants somewhere they can sit down, order a proper cocktail, have a conversation, and still feel like they actually went out.
That is part of the lane Opal Bar PV is creating.
Located on Ignacio L. Vallarta in Zona Romántica, Opal brings a more polished cocktail-lounge energy into one of Puerto Vallarta’s busiest entertainment neighborhoods.
And for a performer like Kim, an intimate room can be exactly what you want.
She does not need lasers.
She does not need twelve backup dancers.
She does not need somebody firing a fog machine every seven minutes.
Give her a guitar.
Give her a microphone.
Give her an audience that came to listen.
That will do just fine.
THIS COULD TURN INTO ONE OF THOSE VERY PUERTO VALLARTA NIGHTS
One of my favorite things about living in Puerto Vallarta is how quickly a completely normal Tuesday can get out of hand.
And I mean that lovingly.
You leave the house saying you are just going to hear a little music.
Then somebody you know walks in.
Then somebody else walks in.
Then somebody orders another round.
Then the singer gets to that song.
Somebody starts dancing who absolutely should not have started dancing.
And now it is three hours later and Tuesday has somehow become an event.
That is the kind of energy I could easily see developing here.
An intimate room.
A strong performer.
Cocktails.
People actually paying attention to the music.
Sometimes smaller really is better.
We just do not always admit it.
KIM COMES WITH SOME MUSICAL MILEAGE
One of the reasons Kim’s performances carry weight is simple.
She has been doing this for a while.
This is not somebody who bought a guitar last Thursday and decided she might try singing because somebody told her she sounded cute at karaoke.
Kim has spent years performing.
Her musical background stretches across soul, blues, funk, rock, R&B, original music, and singer-songwriter performances.
She has played intimate rooms, festivals, stages, and venues in the United States, Mexico, and beyond.
That experience matters.
Because there is a difference between knowing how to sing a song and knowing how to hold a room.
Kim knows how to hold a room.
And a place like Opal gives an artist the chance to work closer to the audience instead of performing from fifty feet away while everybody screams over each other.
I personally like that.
A LOT.
SEPTEMBER IS WHEN PUERTO VALLARTA STARTS STRETCHING ITS LEGS AGAIN
We are also entering one of my favorite periods in Puerto Vallarta.
The entertainment calendar starts waking back up.
Performers return.
New shows get announced.
Venues start filling their schedules.
The people who spent the summer saying, “It is too hot, I am staying home,” suddenly rediscover clothing.
And the season slowly starts building momentum.
You usually feel it first in nights like this.
Not necessarily some giant production.
Not necessarily a massive opening with fireworks and seventeen sponsors.
Sometimes it is simply a really good singer, a good room, and enough people packed together to create the right energy.
That works for me.

If you enjoy real singers, real musicianship, soul, blues, guitar, cocktails, and intimate live music, put September 22 on your calendar.
Kim Archer knows how to work a stage.
Opal is building something interesting in Zona Romántica.
Now we get to see what happens when the two meet.
